If you missed it, I was on FOX News last night - you can see the full story here. Julin Jean, star of my horror film Spirit Camp was carjacked in the Hieghts area of Houston, and her mini-cooper was stolen. It was like a scene right out of a horror movie.

The perp stuck a gun in Julin's face, forced her out of the car, and she escaped with a sprained ankle.

She's lucky to be alive.

Fox did a fun story drawing comparisons between her on screen persona of B movie scream queen, and real life victim. I think it helped bring a little closure and levity to a traumatic experience.

Special thanks to Ned Hibbard for all his support of the community, and his excellent journalism - he always finds a perfect balance of delivering news and making it engaging, entertaining and fun.

Winning numbers: 2-4-23-38-46, Mega Ball 23.

The jackpot was too big not to play... I didn't win, obviously - but if I did, I'd keep doing the same thing I'm doing now... taking pictures, making movies, and making music... although my movies would have bigger budgets, lol...

Just a quick update on the status of Code of Evil... everyone wants to know "what's happening with Code of Evil?" ...don't worry, it's still happening. These things take time. The film will be shot entirely on green screen... though this sounds simple, a lot of technical considerations go into it.

My current project, DEEP TERROR, is about 1/3 green screen. While still a high concept film, the number of locations and cast is smaller... I felt this would be a great way to test out many of the processes for CoE on a smaller scale. It's proved to be an invaluable experience...

I'm looking for a 2012 release on DT... I'm about 75% complete with production.

Once that is completed, I'm gearing back up for CoE... so stay tuned.

One of the challenges of my most recent film DEEP TERROR was aging one of the characters. Crucial to the dynamic of the story was the age difference between the leads... in that classic rookie/veteran dynamic found in many action buddy movies.

It took 3 hours everyday to transform John Lansch into Capt. Jay... a salty old dog of the sea.

I custom mixed and brushed in the hair and beard color - then we shot several camera tests to insure continuity from one day to the next. From scene to scene it looks identical. I'll be posting a time lapse video of the process soon.

By the time most days are calling for lunch, we are done with makeup, camera test, and rehearsals - and are getting a shot it. It definitely made for some LONG days.

It was a little daunting knowing that was how the day was going to start out every day... and there were certainly times in the planning stage that we weren't certain it would work... but we learned to enjoy the process, and persevere.

It always seems that some of the most challenging situations turn into the best experiences. That's one of the things I love about filmmaking.

Thanks again to John Lansch for his patience and dedication!

According to a new study published in Archives of Internal Medicine, people who frequently consumed chocolate had a lower BMI (Body Mass Index). Chocolate eaters are also less likely to get heart disease and stroke. James Cameron is the first person to solo dive to the deepest part of the ocean - the Mariana Trench. Ironically, this is exactly what my new film DEEP TERROR is about. Production is currently 75% completed.

I wrote the script back in August of 2011, and suddenly it has gotten very topical. I had no idea Cameron was planning his mission to the Challenger Deep. I will likely have to rewrite a few lines to keep up with current events.

Congrats to James Cameron on this historic dive. The last time someone reached that depth was in the 1960s...

Here's a still from last night's shoot with Dwayne Smith. The scene is spoken entirely in Russian - Dwayne spent months meticulously preparing for the role. Special thanks to Julitta Pourciau who translated the dialogue and coached on dialect. And thanks to John Lansch and Drew Donovan behind the scenes.

I've been in production on a new action/thriller called DEEP TERROR. It's Die Hard on a mini-submersible - marine biologists caught up in a terrorist plot to recover the worlds most destructive weapon of mass destruction.

We've been filming for the last 2 weeks, and still going - shooting some green screen shots tonight. So far it's been an amazing run... filmmaking continues to be one of the most challenging, yet rewarding professional experiences for me.

It's quite a departure from my last film Spirit Camp - though despite the more serious tone, I do manage to keep some irreverently comic moments.
I'll be updating with some behind the scenes footage soon!

It's not often I get excited about a refrigerator... okay, I've never gotten excited about a refrigerator - until now.

When I was 12, I started playing guitar and instantly wanted a Marshall stack. (For those of you who don't know, a Marshall stack is 2 cabinets stacked on top of each other. Each cab has 4, 12 inch speakers and is powered by a 100 watt head.)

As soon as I saved enough cash, I went and bought one. (Although I did put a Soldano SLO on it). BTW Soldano built amps for Eric Capton and Eddie Van Halen back in the day.

What does all this have to do with refrigerators?

Well, Marshall is introducing the half stack mini-fridge! This is perfect for any jam room. I have to have one. They hit stores in October... you can learn more here http://marshallfridge.com/

I just added a new family member... the Variax JTV 59... I love Les Pauls, and this thing has a Les Paul body, and a shaped, cutaway neck that allows MUCH more access to the neck. It sounds great, the action is set perfectly, and I'm looking forward to putting it through it's paces. I'll post a full review with some audio samples soon... stay tuned... and listen for it on my next song!

I recently recorded an a acoustic version of the Tears for Fears classic MAD WORLD, made famous by Gary Jules and the film Donnie Darko. I put my own spin on it in an attempt to do something a little different. Thankfully, the Houston Press thought that it didn't suck. It made their top 10 best covers. Thank you. Check out the full article feature some other great Houston musicians.

I recently went to Austin with writer Nate "Riverhorse" Nakadate to photograph legendary blues Telecaster master Redd Volkaert. Redd invited us into his home, served us cornbread and beans, and displayed his collection of guitars, including some 50's era Telecasters, acquired in the most unique of ways.

Only in Texas can you step into someone kitchen and see a Grammy statue on the counter next to a plate of cornbread. It was a great trip to Austin, and an honor to meet Redd. Here's a link to Freboard Journal - the full article is on newsstands now.

UPDATE 3/20/12

Still in production on a feature film... this is my first day off in 2 weeks. I appreciate your patience. A few more days of shooting and I'm back to my regular schedule.

Filming is going great, and we've covered an amazing amount of the script. John Lansch has put in an outstanding performance and was pictured wrapped last night.

Through the magic of FX makeup, John was aged 15 years for this production, undergoing 2 hours of daily makeup, plus camera test to make sure the makeup matched day to day. All in all it was a 3 hour process before he was camera ready. I'll be posting some behind the scenes of the process soon! Big thanks to John for his participation in this film!

MAD WORLD (Acoustic)

Mad World, written by Tears for Fears and made famous by Gary Jules and Donnie Darko, is one of my favorite songs. The Gary Jules version is awesome. I wanted to cover the song, but I wanted to do a different take on it. Check out my acoustic version, and I hope you enjoy. You can download on iTunes.
